A magnificent country house hotel: style and comfort
We stayed for one night only to break a journey from Scotland to the South of England, so have given a "Good" review, as opposed to "Excellent" on the basis that we didn't use any of the facilities. Oulton Hall certainly has the "wow" factor when driving up to the entrance and this carried through to the Hall itself. We were staying over the Christmas period and the Christmas trees/decorations were enchanting and magical. All of the public rooms are charming and comfortable. The receptionists were efficient and welcoming and our room also comfortable and well-appointed. Our "thing" when staying in a hotel is the quality of the bathroom and this one didn't disappoint: clean, well-equipped and well lit. The only TINY thing was insufficient light around the mirror for putting on make-up, but this is a minor niggle. The restaurant experience was very good: efficient service and a well cooked and presented dinner. Breakfast offered a good variety of choice, patisserie as well as hot. Some of the hot food could have been warmer. We will certainly visit again and for longer as a base for exploring the area.
Christmas and birthday gift stay
A wonderful hotel, with such welcoming and friendly staff and so beautifully decorated at Christmas time - simply magical. Our room was spacious and comfy and both my children had individual pull out beds. The breakfast was abundant and delicious - so much choice. We had a lovely dip in the pool and it was my birthday too and I was touched by the balloon and hand written card left on my bed for me - very much appreciated. Thank you to all the staff for another wonderful visit and we hope to back next year too.
A lovely experience to visit a beautiful building with ambience in a wonderful setting
I believe that Mrs Irene McNeil conveyed to you our sentiments of the New Year Evening stay. A wonderful evening except a disappointment with the meal. We are regular visitors and in the past have played golf a while ago. The distance - not to pop to - but well worth the journey usually
Good except we were refused entry to the Spa, as it was full when we arrived.
Overall it was a nice stay at Oulton Hall. However, the Spa was full when we arrived and we were refused entry. The only slot available was during our evening meal booking, so we missed out having a Spa, which was one of the main reasons we booked this hotel. When we did access the Spa in the morning before breakfast, the Steam Room was out of action.
Blissful 👌
Well what can i say, stayed here over christmas and it made a lasting impression. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel special, and the place gives you that feeling like your in a chrismas film. From the decor and standard of the room, to the dining experience, service was impeccable, food amazing. A big thank you to all the team at oulton hall we will most definitly be returning for more of the same Thanks guys
Awesome NYE Experience!
I just wanted to comment on my experience whilst visiting Oulton Hall Golf & Spa Resort. I’ve been to a few locations purporting to be Golf & Spa resorts. Many have been good but Oulton Hall stands out just for its attention to detail. The decoration of Oulton Hall over this holiday period was simply fantastic, as was the service, the ambience and the staff, but the real star for me was the menu and the food! The food is the one thing that a lot of places, especially during holiday periods such as Christmas and the New Year, can be a bit ‘hit & miss.’ That was definitely NOT the case here. The menu was creative and its execution, what reached the plate, was nothing short of first class! 5 stars for me and I shall definitely visit again!
Oulton Hall was simply wonderful
Amazing few days at Oulton Hall, The staff and decoration for NYE were beyond our expectations. Coupled with very thoughtful front of house staff and an amazing new menu, creating some wonderful dishesThis won’t be our only visit. Thanks again to all the staff for a wonderful few days
A truly beautiful hotel
Really enjoyed my spa break, what a fantastic way to start the new year. A truly beautiful hotel, great room and food. Staff can’t do enough for you.
Residential Christmas Package 2025
Overall we enjoyed our 4 day stay over Christmas at Oulton Hall. We found the Christmas dinner was superb with good attentive service. We were very pleased with our country view room. The room it self was nicely laid out and very clean. There was a nice festive atmosphere within the hotel, also the staff were with very pleasant and helpful. However, we found the breakfast slightly disappointing. The actual food was of good quality but was spoilt often by being lukewarm, it was just down to luck if you caught the food hot or cold. This could be remedied by a more efficient hotplate to keep the food at a reasonable temperature. One final negative the dogs and their owners. Some irresponsible owners let their dogs sit with them on the sofas in the drawing room, it is not acceptable to have dog hair transferred to your clothing. Would we come back, yes if dogs were not allowed in the hotel, unless they have a specific designated area for the dogs and their owners.
A Memorable Time.
My wife and I spent a pre New Year couple of relaxing nights here after the rigours of Christmas and I have to say it was fantastic. The new food menu was excellent. The atmosphere, decoration and ambience of the hotel for Christmas and New Year was especially heart warming, the signs were obviously there that the hotel staffs and management had gone into a lot of effort to ensure our stay was a memorable one! We will probably re-book sometime in the spring. A memorable experience! Well done to all!
Super visit over new year 2026 💥
Had such a brilliant stay over new year. Very clean and cosy. What a great way to bring in the new year. The hotel looked absolutely fantastic and staff were great and attentive. The food was really nice i caught conversation that it was a new menu. If you have not visited oulton hall and in the area definitely worth a visit. Thanks so much Team Grice
Great venue, just a few tweaks needed
Communal areas well kept and decorated for Christmas. Room with separate beds for children was a good size. Room/bathroom was well appointed but a little tired in places. Single glazed windows were mouldy with mould also on the curtains. Breakfast buffet was good but only having one coffee machine for everyone to use wasn't great. Appreciate that kids need to be out of the pool so adults only for spa days etc but the 8-10am slot with breakfast also finishing at 10am meant it was a tight fit to do both. Out for the day so afternoon slot not used.
Some minor issues!
This was our second Christmas stay at Oulton Hall. As last year the hotel stay was amazing and nothing was too much trouble, so friendly. The hotel was stunning with the tree and decorations. We loved our superior room with the extra space for our Labrador. We do have a big but. Last year I emailed Mark Illingworth the then general manager regarding the bar not being able to make the drinks we wanted , an Amaretto sour , a snowball, or a gin fizz . Drinks we like at Christmas and on holiday and readily available elsewhere. Also there was no lemon for my gin and tonic ! They said they didn’t have egg whites or Advocaar. He said he would make sure the bar was better stocked. Also we ordered a red wine which they said wasn’t available so my husband asked if we could drink a bottle we bought with us charging a corkage fee . The waitress told us it would cost £76 ! Unbelievable ! They then bought the wine we originally asked for to the table . This was very disappointing and spoilt our meal to be honest . It lets the hotel down . I understand it isn’t important I feel we should just bring our own drinks next time to enjoy. I also felt the menu was very similar to last year and the buffet was terrible with other customers complaining. I know Mark is no longer manager . I don’t think these are major things to change so I will leave it with you to decide. Our stay was still very enjoyable and our dog loved the attention so thank you . I’m sure we will be returning in the future. Mrs Earl.
Excellent stay
Can't fault the location. Beautiful surroundings with lots of green landscape. Historical building is really charming. All staff ( reception, bar staff, restaurant and cleaning staff) really welcoming and friendly. Room was lovely and clean. Very quiet. No disturbances. Food was excellent over the 4 day Christmas break. Here are a few minor comments for consideration: 1. The hotel welcomes dog which is good for some people but when they are allowed on the lovely plush sofas, you have to question if it's a good idea. 2. Breakfast excellent but sauce in bottles doesn't really fit the profile of the place. 3. People tying shoe laces with their feet on beautiful sofas is annoying. 4. Breakfast plates too small. 5. My wife found the pillows lumpy. Don't know if they had a pillow service. Probably should have asked. 6. We found that the clearance of used glasses and plates after use was slow. 7. The chairs were moved in the great hall to accommodate the choir performance but we're not put back for a long time. 8. Insufficient hangers in the wardrobe 9. Queue for the one coffee machine at breakfast was long and slow moving. 10. Croissants could have been fresher. These are just points to consider as feedback. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay in an amazing hotel and will return. Special mention for Robbie, Yousef, Oliver, Amy and the young girl who dressed as an elf one day. Sadly I didn't get her name. They all gave excellent service. Thank you all.
Christmas cheer
Me and my wife stayed at the Oulton hall hotel over Christmas we thought it was excellent atmosphere was great food very good would definitely recommend
Great value couples break
We came between Christmas and New Year for a one night dinner, bed & breakfast couples break. I'm really shocked by some of the negative reviews I've read on here, as we had a very good experience. Our room (128) was lovely and the standard of decor and cleanliness was excellent. See photos. On arrival there seemed to have been a power cut, so check in was quite chaotic on probably one of the busiest weekends of the year, but staff remained positive and dealt with everyone as quickly as they could. We went for a swim - there were plenty of towels and robes, but it was pretty busy (the time of year of course!) There were a treatment rooms looked nice. There were a lot of dogs, but we like dogs and I knew that it was a dog friendly hotel from the website so it was a non issue for us. I heard 2 barks all weekend. I'd definitely come again and bring our dog as they're allowed in the restaurant. To be honest I was more annoyed by a child in the restaurant making fake retching sounds during dinner. Dinner was excellent and there were plenty of choices for myself (vegetarian) and my gluten intolerant husband. Staff were friendly and attentive. Breakfast was good on the whole, again there were gf options available. However there needs to be more space between tables for people to actually get to the food. I ordered vegetarian sausages and scrambled eggs which were nice & hot. Unfortunately they have the same useless toasters as every other hotel, so they are very slow and impossible to coincide with getting hot food delivered. There was a disco going on somewhere near our room, but it finished at 12.15am. We appreciated the free drinks in the mini bar and the nespresso machine in the room. On the whole it was a great value short break.
Christmas Festive Break
We visited for the Christmas Residential Package and we were both extremely impressed with the hotel, staff, food and location. The hotel was impeccably clean and comfortable. The staff were very friendly, responsive and helpful. This was all complemented by stunning location with fabulous walks nearby. We highly recommend Oulton Hall.
Great overnight stay
We had a lovely stay just before Christmas. Warm and friendly staff and amazing room overlooking the golf course. Nice relaxed atmosphere playing games in the drawing room. We went with young children who loved it.
Excellent Hotel
Lovely hotel. We had a wonderful time, but unfortunately we were overcharged after our stay. I have contacted them but I am awaiting a refund.
Much Improved
The refurbishment of this hotel has made such a difference. The building and lobby were always impressive but the rooms and corridors let the place down. Now there is a cohesive feel to the public spaces. The sitting areas and Champagne Bar feel classy and inviting, befitting the age and history of the building. However, the bedrooms and dining room, though impressive in size, were a bit utilitarian and lacked the luxurious feel that the rest of the hotel offers.
