Get out in the country
Explore the sights of scenic Yorkshire
From a leisurely stroll around the dramatic ruins of Kirkstall Abbey to a hike in the glories of the Yorkshire Dales, there’s no reason not to appreciate all of the stunning scenery that makes Yorkshire such an iconic county.
The Yorkshire Dales
There’s no sight quite like that of the Yorkshire Dales, stretching on over mountains, peaks, hills and fields, as far as the eye can see. The walking trails of the Dales begin just under an hour’s drive from Oulton Hall, and there’s a walk for everyone, no matter your ability level.
Under 20 minutes away from Oulton, Oakwell Hall is a local institution. The eponymous Hall reconstructs life as a family home post-English Civil War. But the real star at Oakwell is the 100 acres of award winning country park, playground, nature trails and gardens – there’s so much room for picnics, pond dipping, playing games, walking with the dogs and more. With a fun, interactive visitor centre and gift shop, it’s a great day out for all the family.
The tranquil grounds surrounding the ruins of the 12th century monastic are a great location for a leisurely ramble. Set on the banks of the River Aire, the Abbey is a dramatic focal point – and on the last weekend of each month, it’s also home to outdoor markets featuring food from around the world! Enjoy a walk around the trails and then head to your home away from home at Oulton Hall.
Middleton Woods is the largest remaining ancient woodland site in West Yorkshire, and is especially renowned for beautiful displays of bluebells in springtime – but year round, it’s a delightful walk well worth the visit. The trail climbs through the woods and then up onto the hill beyond with excellent views back across the town to the moor.
